Social Security disability insurance is a program run through the Social Security Administration designed to provide financial support to residents of Newark and across the nation who are physically or mentally unable to seek gainful employment. Although the program is not intended to fully replace one’s salary or lost wages, it may help provide some support to pay for some of the costs of living without a working paycheck.
The process for applying is not easy, and there are restrictions. First, you must be able to prove that you have a physical injury, illness or mental condition that is preventing you from working for over a year, is expected to last over a year or is expected to ultimately be fatal. In addition, you must have paid into the program through your income taxes over the years. If you have not, you may still qualify for Supplemental Security Income if you meet certain low-income criteria or are a child.
The Social Security Administration has a list of illnesses and medical conditions considered severe enough that you may qualify to receive benefits. However, even if your specific condition is not listed, you may still be able to prove that your condition is severe enough to qualify. During the application process, you may be asked to provide information on your medical conditions, medical contacts, medicines, tests and job history among other personal information.
