Reporting income when you are a SSI benefits recipient — Part II

The previous post on this blog discussed the basics of wage reporting in matters related to Supplemental Security Income, of which many people in New Jersey are recipients. The purpose of wage reporting is to keep the Social Security Administration’s SSI program transparent. The wage reporting system helps the SSA to determine adequate benefits for the needy.

According to existing rules, it is the recipient who is responsible for reporting all income, which includes the recipient’s earnings as well as other people’s earnings. The details were discussed in the previous blog post. In a case where an SSI recipient has a representative who takes care of SSI-related matters on behalf of the recipient, that representative is required to report monthly earnings to the SSA.

In order to report wages, recipients or their representatives have three options — they can either take the pay slips in person to the local Social Security office or send them by mail. It is important to note here that the information must include all earnings, such as overtime, bonuses and vacation pay. If the recipient has certain disability-related expenses, that person must also inform the SSA about such income. The third option is informing the SSA via telephone; the details can be found on the SSA’s website.

Current rules require that a SSI recipient submits the earning details for a particular month by the 10th day of the following month. That means that all earning details from the month of January need to be submitted by Feb. 10. If there are changes in the income, that must also be reported within the same time frame.

As mentioned in the previous blog post as well, wage reporting may seem simple but completing the entire process may be difficult for many people.
