Your rights when applying for Supplemental Security Income

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) provides financial support to Newark, New Jersey, residents who require income to meet their needs. Individuals who wish to receive SSI must apply for it, though, during the application and review processes, individuals have rights that can make it easier for them to stay involved in the evaluation.

Applicants for SSI have the right to apply for benefits free of charge. They also have the right to get help from the Social Security Administration (SSA), the agency that administers the program. Those applicants who choose to find help outside of the SSA with their application and appeals processes may do so with the support of attorneys who work in the Social Security Disability and Supplemental Income field.

Individuals seeking financial support through SSI have the right to receive notices of any actions or decisions made on their cases. If they have lawyers helping them, notices will also be sent to the applicants' representatives as well. When they receive these notices that their benefits are stopping, then their notices must include information on how the individuals may appeal their matters for further review.

Supplemental Security Income can be an important piece of an individual's financial health that keeps them afloat and able to pay for the everyday expenses. When their rights are violated during the application and appeals processes, they can experience detrimental losses of support that can lead to greater challenges in their already difficult lives. As the right to representation is guaranteed to SSI applicants, many who choose to request benefits through this system utilize the help of benefits attorneys to support them along the way.
