What are the symptoms of PTSD?

Many New Jersey residents, including veterans who have been in combat, may experience post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD. Although originally connected with traumatic combat experiences, PTSD can in fact affect anyone who has experienced a traumatic event in their lives, including ongoing trauma.

One symptom New Jersey residents who suffer from this mental disorder can experience is flashbacks, or a sudden and vivid memory of the traumatic event or events that caused the condition. People who suffer from PTSD may also exhibit avoidance behaviors like staying completely away from even the thought of an event or person that causes the trauma.

People with PTSD also tend to be scared or anxious easily and can be surprised easily. They may also have difficulty falling or staying asleep. Someone with PTSD may also show signs similar to someone experiencing depression, like a loss of interest in things that a person used to enjoy or a distorted sense of being guilty of something.

The symptoms of PTSD do not necessarily begin at the time a person experiences emotional trauma. Sometimes, symptoms can take a year to develop.

PTSD can be debilitating and leave a combat veteran or other victim unable to get or continue working a regular job. For example, a person who is constantly experiencing flashbacks may have to avoid loud noises and sudden movements, and many suffers of PTSD may be too afraid to set out in public at all.

Someone who is experiencing PTSD may quality for mental illness coverage through the Social Security Disability program. On the other hand, PTSD claims, like all disability claims, involve a complicated application and approval process. The assistance of an experienced Social Security Disability attorney may be helpful in this respect.
