GoFundMe gift costs woman Social Security payments

A woman for whom people started a Go Fund Me page so they can send her to a professional baseball game is now trying to wrangle with the Social Security Administration over her monthly disability checks. Her story might serve as an important reminder to Newark, New Jersey, residents who are receiving disability payments.

The woman suffers from a disease that causes her to have tumorous lesions all over her body. She also had to have a leg amputated on account of a cancer caused by her condition. She relies on Social Security disability payments to support herself, but mentioned in a public forum that she had always wanted to go to see her favorite major league team play a baseball game.

Some people took note of her request and raised $3,700 for her to go see her team play. She did go to the ballpark, and she also got to keep the balance of the gift, a gift for which she expressed a great deal of gratitude. Unfortunately for her, the Social Security Administration also took note of the gift and determined that she should have reported the extra income. The Administration has also notified her that the Administration will hold back $173 of her monthly payments until they offset the $3,700.

Although many Newark, New Jersey, readers might feel the Administration's action is a little harsh under the circumstances, the story still serves as an important reminder that, for certain types of disability payments, specifically SSI, the amount of other income one makes and the resources he or she has can affect disability payments. Questions in this respect can be answered by a qualified Social Security disability attorney in New Jersey.
