Social Security helps people with intellectual disabilities

A recent post here discussed how those New Jersey residents who suffer from some degree of intellectual disability can often avail themselves of Social Security Disability benefits in order to help them provide for their basic needs. Of course, in many cases, people with an intellectual disability may need to have a guardian or other legal representative file for disability on their behalf.

As distinct from a treatable mental illness, a person often suffers from an intellectual disability from birth, although trauma can also leave a person without the ability to function intellectually. For some people, this can mean not being able to live daily life without assistance. For others, although they may be able to function in some respects, finding a job and maintaining a livelihood through that job could prove to be very difficult.

Unfortunately, it is not always simply a matter of showing a valid IQ test to the Social Security Administration and then being well on the way to collecting benefits. Some people may have IQs just high enough where the SSA will expect to see some additional evidence that they actually cannot find gainful employment.

For these sorts of cases, a disabled person, or their families, may want to consider applying for Social Security Disability benefits. At our law firm we work to help people who are in this type of situation. For more information, please visit the mental health section of our law firm's website. This information may help New Jersey residents who need to apply for SSD benefits.
