Disability benefits for mental health conditions

Readers who are familiar with previous posts here may know that New Jersey residents who are suffering from mental illnesses may qualify to receive Social Security Disability benefits. For example, some people in New Jersey suffer from low intellectual functioning or care for a loved one who deals with this issue. Disability coverage for mental health issues is available for these people even though they are not experiencing a "mental illness," strictly speaking. Instead, these people were either born with the condition or at some point experienced trauma or a serious illness that caused it.

A person with an IQ of 70 or less can qualify for disability based on low intellectual functioning. A person with an IQ of less than 60 automatically qualifies, at least with respect to establishing a disabling condition. Moreover, a New Jersey resident who simply does not have the intellectual ability to take care of himself, much less take an IQ test, will automatically qualify.

A person with an IQ of at least 60 but less than 70 has to provide some additional evidence in order to qualify for Social Security Disability benefits based on low intellectual function. For one, the person can point to some other condition, physical or mental, that also limits the ability to work to a significant degree. Failing that, the person will have to show how the low IQ seriously limits the ability to function on the job, socially and in the person's daily personal life.

Of course, it is likely that a person who already struggles with intellectual functioning may have a hard time understanding the nuances of the Social Security system. Getting the right information about Social Security Disability benefits is an important first step.
