What should I bring to my disability interview?

Although much of the process of applying for SSD benefits is done over the internet, there are still some New Jersey residents who, for whatever reason, will be requested to come in to a local office of the Social Security Administration and have an application interview. The interviews are important because they help the Social Security Administration determine whether a New Jersey resident meets the requirements for disability.

A Newark resident who does have to attend an interview needs to bring certain items the SSA will need in order to make an informed decision about the disability application. Perhaps most importantly, a person needs to bring whatever medical information, including records and other notes, he or she has. Additionally, the Administration will need a signed copy of a medical release provide on the Administration's form.

At the interview, a person will also need to have information about workers' compensation if he or she is drawing payments, as well as important dates like marriage and divorce dates and children's birthdays. The person also needs to bring in information about his or her bank account.

There are also two important reminders for a person who may have to attend an application interview. The first is that, obviously, if the Administration also asks for additional information that is not on its checklist, the person should bring that additional information. On the other hand, the Administration encourages people not to delay submitting an application for benefits simply because some of the information is not available immediately.
