What is fibromyalgia and what causes it?

One of the illnesses with which this law office has experience is fibromyalgia. Although many New Jersey residents have probably heard of this illness, some might not be sure quite what it is.

Basically, the illness causes chronic pain in one’s muscles, meaning that a person can feel sore throughout their body. Fatigue is another symptom of fibromyalgia. Other symptoms include headaches, feeling stiff in the morning and insomnia. People with fibromyalgia may also come across as spacey and be unable to remember important details.

Fibromyalgia is a mysterious disease, and researchers are not certain what exactly causes it. While there is some evidence that people inherit this disorder, other possibilities include certain types of illnesses that trigger the condition, much like a virus can sometimes cause cancer. Causes may also include a trauma or any shocking even or even a repetitive injury. Of those 5 million Americans who struggle with this potentially disabling condition, the vast majority, up to 90 percent, are women.

Because it remains a relative unknown in the medical world, fibromyalgia can be difficult to treat. Some people have found relief by treating the condition similar to the way one would treat arthritis. However, other than pain medication, simply living a healthy lifestyle is the best way to treat the disease.

Unfortunately, for some New Jersey residents, fibromyalgia can be debilitating, leaving a person unable to work or even to function daily as would a person who does not suffer with this disease. If a New Jersey resident is forced to leave the workforce because of fibromyalgia, he or she may be able to receive compensation through the Social Security Disability program.
