Benefits for the visually impaired

Social Security disability benefits are available for Newark, New Jersey, who have significant impairments to their vision and who are thus unable to work.

In many respects, a New Jersey resident qualifies for these benefits in the same manner in which or she would qualify for benefits because of other types of disabling conditions. However, the Social Security Administration does have a flat rule providing that a person who even with medical help has 20/200 vision or less, or has less than 20 degrees in one's field of sight is legally blind for Social Security purposes and by definition entitled to benefits, so long as they meet financial and work history requirements.

A person who has very poor eyesight but does not fall within the Administration's definition of blindness can still collect benefits if he or she can show that he or she is not able to work because of his or her medical condition. The person can point to both blindness and some other medical problem in combination in order to support his or her claim that he or she is disabled

Those who are legally blind should also be aware that the Social Security Administration offers more generous rules to the blind with respect to how much money they can earn while still drawing Social Security disability benefits. For example, in 2016, a person who is legally blind can earn up to $1,820 a month and still draw disability. This is higher than the standard $1,130 a month limit.

A person who knows someone who might benefit from these benefits is encouraged to seek the assistance of a Social Security legal professional.
