Veterans: You may be eligible for both VA and SSD benefits

Although the U.S. Military is fast, efficient and effective in matters of combat, the same cannot always be said about how it handles benefits for military personnel and veterans. The Department of Veterans Affairs can be quite the bureaucracy, and some veterans may not even be aware of the benefits they are entitled to as a result of their service and service-related disabilities.

We have previously written that certain veterans may be eligible to receive both VA disability benefits and Social Security Disability Insurance benefits. In today’s post, we’ll talk a little bit more about the connection between the two.

If you suffer from a disability related to your military service, the first step to receiving benefits is to receive a disability rating from the VA. The rating is expressed as a percentage, and the amount of benefits is generally contingent upon the percent to which you are deemed disabled.

If you are eligible for and receiving VA disability benefits, you may also be eligible for SSD benefits through the Social Security Administration. The SSA recently announced that it will expedite the claims of veterans with a 100 percent disability rating from the VA. A copy of the notification letter verifying your disability rating should be included with your SSD application.

Whether you’re a veteran or a life-long civilian, applying for Social Security Disability can be a lengthy and frustrating process. For this and other reasons, it is a good idea to seek help from an experienced SSD attorney who can guide you through the “red tape” and make sure you present the strongest possible case.
