Researchers close in on reliable blood test for fibromyalgia

In recent years, there has been a lot of research aimed at understanding fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia, sometimes referred to as FM or FMS, is a mysterious disease with complex symptoms. It often causes severe pain in patients, leaving them unable to function as they once had and unable to work.

Because fibromyalgia is a mysterious disease, it can often be difficult to demonstrate that a person is suffering from it. Presently, there is no blood test that doctors can use to demonstrate fibromyalgia. Further complicating matters, there is usually no visible sign of physical damage in fibromyalgia patients’ bodies. These facts have complicated many disability claims over the years, leaving many people who are suffering from FMS frustrated when they try to obtain the Social Security disability benefits they need and deserve.

With these facts in mind, we think a recent news story is worth sharing with you.

According to a study that will be published next month, researchers may be well on their way to developing a quick blood test that will reliably diagnose fibromyalgia. Researchers apparently were able to use a powerful microscope to detect specific molecules present in the blood of patients who are known to be suffering from FMS. More technical details about the study are available in the source article we’ve linked to below.

At this point, the new method for detecting fibromyalgia is still in its infancy, and we may have to wait for the method to be approved and for it to be widely introduced. When that day comes, it will be welcome news for fibromyalgia patients and their families.
