Man threatens workers after being denied disability benefits

Applying for Social Security disability benefits can be a difficult process in New Jersey and beyond. In addition to confusing laws, the government also enforces strict requirements for people receiving Social Security disability benefits. Those who receive benefits must be totally disabled and unable to work.

When a person is denied disability benefits, it can be very frustrating. That was the case for one man was so distraught after being denied disability benefits that he threatened Social Security workers.

The incident happened in late May after a 50-year-old man was denied benefits. His family members called authorities after the man headed to the Social Security office with a gun. Fortunately, the local sheriff stopped the man before he was able to get to the office and managed to calm him down.

Recently, the man was sentenced to one year of probation. He also is forbidden from entering a federal building without permission from his probation officer. He also cannot have firearms in his possession.

The man apologized for the incident, and said that he was having a bad day. He is now working with mental health professionals, as well as an attorney to sort out his request for disability benefits.

Although this case is an extreme example, it shows how critical disability payments can be. Social Security disability benefits may have been the only option left for the man in this case. However, instead of becoming violent, he should have spoken with an attorney who is familiar with the application process. Often, people can appeal decisions made by the Social Security Administration.
