Disability benefits particularly helpful in one rural community

Many people living in New Jersey depend on Social Security disability benefits. For those who are unable to work because of an illness or injury, disability benefits provide them with basic necessities to live out their life. One area of the country is particularly dependent on those benefits. In fact, nearly 10 percent of the county's income comes from Social Security benefits.

A woman living in Marshall County, a rural community in Tennessee, receives slightly more than $700 each month in Social Security disability benefits. The woman began receiving the benefits in 1996 when severe depression prevented her from working a full-time job.

That woman isn't alone. Those living in Marshall County are more dependent on Social Security payments than residents living in other counties around the country.

In Marshall County, slightly more than 6,000 people received some form of Social Security benefits. In total, about $77 million was allocated to residents in the county.

In 2009, Marshall County residents on average received just over $2,500 in Social Security benefits. That year, the national average was slightly lower at close to $2,200 per person.

Many people rely on Social Security disability benefits, as evidenced by the woman in this story. Those in New Jersey or elsewhere who are unable to work because of an illness or injury may wish to consider working with an experienced attorney. Applying for SSDI can be confusing, but an attorney can help an individual throughout the entire process to be sure that they begin receiving the benefits they deserve.
